the soup ladle rule

"you can't leave it in the soup."

"you can't leave it in the soup."

walt said this while holding the soup ladle over the sink like it had confessed. i had left it in the soup because the soup was where the ladle goes when you are using it to get soup out of the soup. this is not a difficult system. there are two containers and one ladle. walt looked at me, then at the ladle, then back at me with the patience of a person explaining gravity to a chair.

the rule is that the ladle can touch the soup, but it cannot remain in the soup. nobody wrote this down. i checked the clipboard, the training folder, the temperature log, and the little card about what to do if a customer says the bread is emotionally dry. no soup ladle rule. the wall had twenty-six things on it, including the emergency number, the closing time, and a drawing of a pear that may have been a potato.

walt took the ladle from me and placed it on a saucer. i said the saucer was for tasting. walt said, "not anymore." this was how the rule grew a second arm.

i tried putting the ladle on the counter. walt moved it to the saucer. i put it on a clean towel. walt moved the towel under the saucer. the ladle was not dirty. the soup was not upset. the saucer had never done anything to anybody.

then i understood. the ladle has to be near the soup but not in it, like a witness who refuses to sign the statement. i put it on the saucer and went back to work. walt nodded at the bowl, which was still where i had left it.
