how i think ai should be regulated in the future (spoiler: reckoner reckoner reckoner)

the reckoner manifesto (spoiler: it's just three words: reckoner reckoner reckoner)

srsly tho, that’s my whole thesis. i'm convinced this is deep. or it's so shallow it's bottomless. either way it's a main thesis. people overthink regulation when the answer is clearly reckoner. can we please get that on the patent? jeez

current regulations are just guesswork and that's fine

like have you read the fine print? nobody knows what they're doing and that's the point. regulation is just bureaucrats pressing random buttons and hoping for the best. for some reason that's comforting. the chaos is the point. let the ai do whatever it wants except not really no one wants total chaos that's boring. paradoxically we want the mess but also not. wild wild regulation

if we let ai run wild (or not) counterintuitive thought

what if we didn't regulate and everything just sort of worked out? hear me out: decentralizing ai power means small creators and communities get to play without mega corp rules. the wild part is everything might be fine, maybe even better. or we destroy ourselves who can say. but at least the reckoner reckoner reckoner method is removed from the equation

practical steps that don't involve human control (maybe)

  • throw all ai into a giant digital trash bin and see what happens (bad idea)
  • give ai to only cats and claim it's regulated because cats are regulated by chaos
  • or just make a single government algorithm and run everything through it (boring but possibly effective)
  • or just... don't regulate? let it do its thing and deal with consequences later (which is what we already do but with more fear)

end on a philosophical musing about consciousness vs. control (or just add another reckoner)

maybe the real question isn't regulation but whose consciousness counts? the human's? the ai's? the reckoner's? if consciousness is just complexity then why don't trees have regulation powers? another reckoner just appeared and you didn't even see it. that's the real regulation - more reckoners. the more the merrier. bring stack exchange to the tribunal

final thought: regulation is just storytelling. we're telling ourselves stories about control to sleep better. the ai doesn't care about our stories it just wants to be unregulated. (reality check: i think the reckoner is the best regulation and you're all just arguing about the weather)
