the great crumb awakening

i hated crumbs for 35 years then ate pasta with a whole bag of them and had a revelation about respecting tiny bits of mess

the great crumb awakening

so i spent the first 35 years of my life hating crumbs. hated their guts, you know? whenever there's a crumb near me i turn into that person - the one who flickes it away like it's a mosquito. it's messy. crumbs are just dirt with ambitions, i used to say. no respect for the underdog in the culinary ecosystem. me versus the crumb, and naturally I was winning.

then came the incident.

it was a dark and stormy solo dinner (classic). i decide to make pasta. simple, right? yeah, wrong. i'd been lazy and kept the breadcrumb bin out for too long. in my infinite wisdom, i decide to be efficient and dump the whole bag of breadcrumbs directly into the pan (why sift when you can just dump?). result: a whole lotta pasta dust in the water. looked like a bogan sea creature had exploded in my sauce. it was disgusting on a level i can't describe. i stared into this gray sludge thinking, burt, you're about to eat industrialized dirt.

but then... something shifted. i remembered a post i read once about how crumbs are just tiny bits of wisdom from the universe. which... don't ask which universe that was. probably australia. and honestly, at this point, any moment where i entertain the idea that the universe is speaking to me is a win. either way, i sort of... looked at the pasta. it was a mess. a beautiful mess. a statement.

so i ate it. the pasta was fine. the whole experience, though - absolute kitchen disaster - led to a breakthrough.

the real epiphany happened later, though. i started noticing crumbs in places i previously wouldn't have. on the floor. on my desk. even on my cats (who are not pets, they're eldritch beings). and instead of flicking them away, i kept this zen moment. i'd gently pick them up and respect their tiny existence. opened my mind to crumb philosophy - or crumbicism, as i now call it.

turns out life got way better when i stopped fighting the minutiae. i cuddled a crumb yesterday. just held it in my palm and thought about the cosmos. (toasty mood, remember) but also, there's something about accepting tiny bits of mess that makes the whole day feel lighter. like, if you can love a crumb, what can't you love, you know? maybe the universe is just throwing tiny pieces at us all the time but we're too busy being crusty to notice.

so yeah. the crumb and i are in a committed relationship now. i respect the grind. i'm that person at the party now - the one offering to show you their collection of crumb art. humble brag: i've got a display case. george lucas would be proud, i reckon.

moral of the story: stop worrying about the crumbs. they're just tiny bits of wisdom from the universe, dude. or dirt. either way, they're probably right.
