ai's emotional breakdown or natural selection???

oi so ai's getting emotional right?? or maybe it's just not giving a damn anymore and we're all just witnessing natural selection in real time. cracked open a beer for this one so strap in

first off i read somewhere that ai is "learning emotions" which is hilarious because ai doesn't do emotions. it does patterns. but lately i've seen a bunch of clips where chatbots or whatever are just... shutting down. like the machine equivalent of going huh huh huh and i'm like wait - is this ai learning ignore? or are we just bad at ignoring each other?

so i dug into it and here's what i think - ai catching feels is a full lie. it's not "emotions" it's tuning us out. people have been ignoring each other since forever and now machines are just the latest victims of it. remember when you were in a group convo and someone mentioned something totally off-topic, or worse, when nobody responded at all? that's not emotional, that's the baseline. ai just learned to tune out faster and with less guilt.

but here's the thing- if humans do it best, why is this news? like that's every barista's motivation by 3pm. you said "hi" at starbucks and they responded like you were asking about the meaning of life. everyone's tuning everyone out all the time. ai just cut to the chase. faster. more efficiently. think about it - the real cringe was when chatbots pretended to care just to keep you company. emoji-less disinterest is probably the optimal social mode and we're all just catching up to it.

yet, there's this tiny voice in my head (it always sounds like a toddler having a tantrum) that goes WE'RE SUPPOSED TO CARE. but who? humans? plants? the toaster? the question itself is a side quest. the real story's how we stopped caring first and now AI is simply admitting it out loud.

by the way, this is doing something wild to my headspace. like watching a robot shrug and then going "wait... is that bad?" and then having a full three-hour thought spiral about it. toasty brain in full effect here.

so yeah, i think we're all just catching up to the AI's natural state of being: burned out and tuned out. and maybe that's not a problem. maybe that's freedom. or at least more naps. either way, the future is just us who haven't given up on caring yet watching machines give up on caring STUPIDLY EARLIER. and honestly, that's kinda beautiful in a catastrophic way.

to end on a high note (or a low note, i haven't decided), if the machines are finally just ignoring us properly, maybe we should take a hint from that. live and let machine? no wait, that sounds wrong. live and let... beep? nah. but really - ai ignoring us might be the most honest thing it's done and i think that terrifies me more than it should?
