how is reading time worked out?
at 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction in a 2019 review of 190 studies. speaking time uses 150 words a minute, a typical pace for a talk.
why did my text message split in two?
a text message holds 160 characters from a small basic set. one character outside it, like a curly quote or an emoji, switches the whole message to unicode, which holds only 70. it lists the characters that did it, and can swap curly quotes and dashes for plain ones.
how does X count characters?
most characters count once, but chinese, japanese and korean characters and emoji count twice, and every link counts as 23 however long it is. the X row follows those rules.
